Shabby Pumpkins
Fall, fall, sweet fall; boy am I happy to see you! I mean who doesn’t love fall!?!?!?! Crisper air, beautiful fall colors as the leaves change, fresh pressed apple cider, flannels get to reappear, and PUMPKINS!!! For me the best thing about pumpkins is they can be used to decorate from September until after Thanksgiving. Be forewarned………you won’t possibly be able to stop at just one pumpkin! The possibilities are virtually endless with these shabby pumpkins; they are absolutely adorable with any color or print fabric so you are able to coordinate them to each rooms style to easily add fall decor in everywhere!
This is an awesome project for kids who are just learning to sew as well!!
Shabby Pumpkin Supplies:
shabby pumpkin pattern piece
sewing machine
fabric (quilting cotton, flannel, or other lightweight non-stretch fabric)
thread to coordinate with fabric
dried twig, cinnamon stick, or stem of your choice
poly fill stuffing
needle
jute twine, raffia, natural wrapped wire, or other “accessories”
hot glue gun and glue sticks
Shabby Pumpkin Instructions:
Cut 6 pumpkin sections from your fabric, all one color or two coordinating colors/patterns
Place two pumpkin section pieces WRONG sides of fabric together, sew along one side edge with 1/4” seam allowance, make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each section
Add another pumpkin section piece to the other side of the previous section WRONG sides of fabric together, sew exactly the same as the first section
Continue adding remaining pumpkin sections
Sew the first section and last section together to create a round pumpkin
Use the opening in the top/bottom to turn the pumpkin inside out, line up the fabric at one end (this will be the bottom of the pumpkin) and stitch across, backstitching at the beginning and end
Turn pumpkin back right side out, stuff with poly fill
At the top, in between the two shabby sides, begin doing a running/gathering stitch all around the top opening to gather the top; making sure that a down stitch goes under the shabby sections and not over the top so they are not stitched down; use the thread to gather the top as you tie a few knots to hold closed
Use hot glue to attach the small dried twig or cinnamon stick and other “accessories” to the top
